The people of Florence are reclaiming the use of the spaces along the Arno, making their way to its banks in unscripted ways and filling them with spontaneous activities when the tide allows.
A major intervention proposes to develop the northern flank of the river to offer proper spaces for these activities reconnecting the city to the river and nature both across and along the old retaining wall.
As in Renaissance gardens, height difference is used to differentiate spaces in a promenade that will also vary with seasonal tide.
Besides floating and sinkable elements like barges and market stalls, a series of lantern islands will pop out of the river offering gardens and spaces to disconnect from the city.
